Dry takeoff and landing from the boat deck, no swimming required, ages 5 and up, ten minutes from your hotel. Highlights: - Leaves from Kewalo Basin Harbor, ten minutes by car from any Waikiki hotel, with hourly departures every day of the year - Dry takeoff and dry landing from the boat deck; you never touch the water unless you ask for the optional mid-flight dip - Four line lengths from 700 to 1,200 feet, so first-timers and thrill-seekers can be on the same boat - Tandem and triple harnesses: couples, parents with kids, or three friends fly together - Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach, the Honolulu skyline and the Koʻolau mountains in one slow, silent 360-degree view - Coast Guard-licensed captains, ASTM parasailing equipment standards, free cancellation; 4.9 stars across more than 8,000 reviews Parasailing is the one adventure that fits in a Waikiki morning without a car, a tour bus or a full day. You leave the hotel after breakfast, you are a thousand feet over the ocean by ten, and you are back on the beach for lunch with the best photo of the trip already on your phone. This page covers the flight we book for family and friends, what it costs, who should skip it, and how to get the most out of the hour. ## Why this made our list Every parasail boat in Honolulu runs from the same harbor and flies over the same bay, so the decision comes down to the crew, the boat and the equipment. Waikiki Beach Parasail flies on the X-Treme fleet out of Kewalo Basin, with Coast Guard-licensed captains, winch boats built for parasailing and equipment that meets the ASTM parasailing standard. The operation has been doing this for decades and holds a 4.9-star rating across more than 8,000 reviews, which is as good as any water activity on the island. The second reason is how easy it is. Hourly departures from 8 am to 5 pm every day of the year, a ten-minute ride from any hotel, a dry takeoff and a dry landing. You can do it in the clothes you walked out of the hotel in. The third is the view. Māmala Bay is the one piece of water on Oʻahu where you can see Diamond Head, the entire sweep of Waikiki, downtown Honolulu, the airport and the Koʻolau range in a single slow turn. There is no boat tour, hike or helicopter that gives you that angle for $75. ### How it compares There are a couple of other parasail operations in Honolulu, and they also leave from Kewalo Basin. We looked at line lengths, harness options, safety equipment and what guests say afterward. The option we book has the longest line on the south shore at 1,200 feet, flies up to three people together, and has the review history to back it up. If you are staying in Ko Olina or on the west side there are parasail boats there too, but for anyone in Waikiki, Kewalo Basin is the harbor. ## What the parasailing trip is like The whole experience is about an hour. Here is how it goes. - Check in at Kewalo Basin. Thirty minutes before departure, at the slip on the harbor’s Ala Moana Boulevard side. You sign the waiver, get weighed for the harness pairing, and get a life jacket. - Motor out past the breakwater. Five minutes to the flight zone off Ala Moana and Waikiki. The crew gives the briefing on the way: hands here, feet here, knees bent for landing. - Harness up on the back deck. You sit on the launch platform, the crew clips the harness to the bar, and the canopy fills behind the boat. - The lift. The winch pays out line and you rise off the deck in a smooth arc. Within a minute the boat is a toy below you and the noise is gone. - The flight. Eight to twelve minutes at your chosen height. Diamond Head on one side, the city on the other, turtles and (in season) whales below. The captain circles slowly so everyone on the boat gets the view. - The dip, if you want it. Thumbs up and the captain lowers you until your feet skim the water, then winches you back up. Thumbs down and you stay dry. - Landing. The winch reels you back onto the deck as gently as you left. Unclip, sit down, and watch the next pair go. ## Prices and what you get Flights are priced by line length: 700 feet from $75, 850 feet from $90, 1,000 feet from $105 and 1,200 feet from $120 per flyer, plus tax, booking fees and a small per-person marine fuel surcharge. An observer seat, for someone who wants to ride along and take photos without flying, is about $50. Everyone on the boat flies tandem or triple, so book one line length for your whole group. There is no cheaper way to see Oʻahu from the air. A helicopter flight runs several hundred dollars a seat; a 700-foot parasail flight gives you the same view of Waikiki for $75. ## Who it’s for (and who should skip it) Anyone from age 5 up who wants the view and a small, safe thrill. Couples, parents with kids, grandparents, non-swimmers, first-timers. The harness does all the work; you just sit. Skip it if you are pregnant or have a recent back, neck or shoulder injury. Skip it if your child is under 5. If you weigh under 130 pounds you will fly tandem rather than solo, which most people prefer anyway. ## Where to check in and how to get there Kewalo Basin Harbor is at 1125 Ala Moana Boulevard, on the ocean side of the road between Ala Moana Beach Park and Kakaʻako Waterfront Park. From Waikiki it is a ten-minute drive or a $10 to $15 rideshare; the harbor has free parking. If you want to walk, the path through Ala Moana Beach Park takes about 30 minutes from the Hilton end of Waikiki and is a pretty way to arrive. Arrive 30 minutes early. The boat runs on a schedule and the next hour’s group is waiting. Full directions, the price table and the weight and age rules are on WaikikiBeachParasail.com, or call (808) 737-3599. ## Best time to go Time of day. Morning, between 8 and 11 am, for the lightest trade winds and the flattest water. The afternoon trades make the boat ride bouncier but do not affect the flight much. The 4 and 5 pm flights have the best light on Diamond Head. Time of year. It runs every day of the year, and Waikiki’s south shore is sheltered from the winter swells that hit the North Shore. December through April adds humpback whales below you. Summer brings the occasional south swell, which makes the ride out more fun and the flight no different. ## Local tips before you book - Book the morning. Lightest wind, calmest water, and you still have the whole day. - Go higher than you think. The 1,200-foot flight feels no scarier than the 700; it just gives you a longer, higher view. If budget allows, take it. - Bring a strap for your sunglasses. Anything loose goes in the bay. - Ask for the dip. Kids remember the dip more than the view. - Pair it with Ala Moana. The beach park next to the harbor has the calmest swimming on the south shore. Fly at 9, swim at 11, lunch at the Ala Moana food hall across the road. For the rest of the week, see our things to do in Waikiki guide. ## The verdict The easiest big adventure on Oʻahu. Ten minutes from the hotel, an hour on the boat, no swimming, no car, and a view of Waikiki nothing else gives you for the price. Book the morning flight, take the longest line you can afford, and say yes to the dip. Included: - About an hour on the water with a Coast Guard-licensed captain and crew - Harness, life jacket and the full safety briefing - A flight of 700, 850, 1,000 or 1,200 feet depending on the option you book - Observer seats for family who want to ride along without flying Not included: - Tax, booking fees and a small per-person marine fuel surcharge added at checkout - Photos and video (ask the crew about the day's options) - Gratuity for the crew Restrictions: - Ages 5 and up - Solo flyers need to weigh at least 130 lb; tandem and triple flights take a combined 125 to 560 lb - Not for pregnant guests or anyone with recent back, neck or shoulder injuries - Check in 30 minutes before your departure; the boat leaves on time - Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure (72 hours for groups of six or more); weather cancellations are refunded or rescheduled in full Frequently asked questions: Q: Where does Waikiki parasailing leave from? A: There is no parasail boat on Waikiki Beach itself; the operators run from Kewalo Basin Harbor at 1125 Ala Moana Boulevard, between Ala Moana Beach Park and Kakaʻako. It is a ten-minute drive or rideshare from any Waikiki hotel, or a 30-minute walk along Ala Moana Beach Park. Parking at the harbor is free. Q: Do I get wet? A: Only if you ask. Takeoff and landing are both on the boat deck. The crew will offer to dip your feet in the water during the flight if you want it, and most kids do. Q: How high do you go and how long is the flight? A: The line options are 700, 850, 1,000 and 1,200 feet. The flight itself is roughly 8 to 12 minutes depending on the length, and the whole trip is about an hour on the boat because several groups fly on each departure. Q: How much does parasailing in Waikiki cost? A: From $75 per flyer for the 700-foot flight, up to $120 for the 1,200-foot flight, plus tax, booking fees and a small fuel surcharge. Observers who ride along without flying pay about $50. Q: Can kids parasail? A: Yes, from age 5, flying tandem with an adult. The combined weight of a tandem or triple flight needs to be between 125 and 560 pounds, and solo flyers need to weigh at least 130 pounds. Q: Can I parasail if I cannot swim? A: Yes. You wear a life jacket, the harness is clipped to the boat the entire time, and you take off and land on the deck. Non-swimmers fly every day. Q: Is it scary? A: The launch is a gentle lift, not a jerk, and the flight is quiet and slow. Most nervous first-timers say the anticipation on the dock was the scariest part. Book the 700-foot flight if you are unsure; you can always go higher next time. Q: What is the best time of day? A: Mornings. The trade winds are lightest before noon and the water in Māmala Bay is at its flattest. Late afternoon has the best light on Diamond Head and the hotels if photos are the priority. Q: Will we see whales? A: From about December through April, humpback whales pass the south shore, and flyers regularly spot them from the air. The crew will point them out. Q: What happens if the weather is bad? A: The captain decides. If the flight is cancelled for wind or weather, you are rescheduled or refunded in full. Waikiki's south shore is sheltered, so cancellations are rare outside a kona-wind day. URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/ja/waikiki-parasailing/ Rank on our list: #1 Where: ホノルル, ケワロ・ベイスン Price: from $75 Duration: ボート乗船約1時間 Season: 年中無休、毎日8時〜17時の毎時出発 Best time: 風が最も弱く海面が穏やかな8時・9時・10時の便。写真重視なら、ダイヤモンドヘッドが黄金色に染まる夕方の便 Ages: 5歳以上 Group size: 乗合ボートで1フライト1〜3人 Check-in: ケワロ・ベイスン港(Kewalo Basin Harbor)、1125 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu(ワイキキから約10分) Guest rating: 4.9 out of 5 from 8209 reviews Book: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/xtreme/items/247/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=fathom1k&ref=waikikiadventureguide&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no ママラ湾の上空、最高1,200フィート(約365m)へ。 A: はい。 A: はい。 --- ## North Shore Shark Snorkel: Swim With Sharks, No Cage, Off Haleʻiwa URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/north-shore-shark-snorkel/ Rank on our list: #2 Where: Haleʻiwa, North Shore Price: from $100 Duration: 2 hours Season: Year round; calmest May to October Best time: The first departure of the morning, May through October, for the flattest water and the clearest blue Ages: 12 to 75 (cage option from age 5) Group size: 6 guests per boat Check-in: Haleʻiwa Small Boat Harbor, North Shore (about 1 hour from Waikiki) Guest rating: 5 out of 5 from 1067 reviews Book: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/goadventurehawaii/items/331449/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=fathom1k&ref=waikikiadventureguide&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no Two hours three miles off the North Shore in open blue water, swimming with Galapagos and sandbar sharks without a cage, a safety diver beside you the whole time and six guests per boat. The one trip people talk about for the rest of their lives. Highlights: - No cage: you float at the surface in open ocean while Galapagos and sandbar sharks cruise beneath and beside you - A trained safety diver is in the water with the group the whole time, and the crew teaches you how sharks actually behave before you get in - Six guests per boat, so nobody is waiting on deck and everyone gets the full two hours - Three miles off Haleʻiwa in deep blue water, with tiger sharks, tuna, mahi mahi and dolphins possible and humpback whale song in winter - Snorkel and free-dive gear included; no experience needed beyond being comfortable in the ocean - A perfect 5.0 across more than a thousand reviews, the highest-rated water activity on the North Shore Ask anyone who has done it and they will tell you the same thing: the drive to the North Shore was long, the boat ride was bumpy, and sliding into the blue with a dozen sharks underneath you was the best two hours of the trip. This is the one adventure on Oʻahu that people describe as life-changing without exaggerating. This page covers the tour we book, the cage versus no-cage decision, what it costs, and how to make the North Shore drive worth it. ## Why this made our list A handful of shark boats run from Haleʻiwa, and they split into two kinds. The cage tours drop you into a floating cage with windows and let the sharks come to you. The cageless tours put you in the open water with a safety diver. We feature the cageless trip because it is the better experience for anyone who qualifies, and because this particular operation has earned a perfect 5.0 across more than a thousand reviews doing it. Three things set it apart. The boat is capped at six guests, so you are in the water for most of the two hours rather than waiting your turn. A trained safety diver is in the water with you the whole time, free diving down to the sharks, reading their behavior and positioning the group. And the crew treats the briefing as the point of the trip: by the time you get in, you understand why a Galapagos shark circles, what a sandbar shark’s body language means, and why none of it is a threat. ### How it compares The big cage boats carry more people, run more departures and cost a little less, and they are the right call for kids under 12 or anyone who wants a barrier. We link the top-rated cage tour as the second button on this page. Among the cageless operators, the differences are group size and the quality of the safety diver, and the six-guest boat with the perfect rating is the one we send people to. ## What the shark snorkel is like Two hours dock to dock. Here is how it goes. - Check in at Haleʻiwa Harbor. The small-boat harbor on the ocean side of Haleʻiwa town. Waivers, gear fitting, and the briefing: how sharks see, how to hold your body in the water, where to look. - Run out three miles. Fifteen to twenty minutes north-west into deep water, past the surf line. On a flat summer morning the Waiʻanae mountains stand up behind you and the ocean goes cobalt. - The sharks arrive. The boat settles at a spot the sharks know, and within minutes the fins appear: Galapagos sharks first, usually, then sandbars. The crew counts them off from the deck. - In the water. You slide in off the swim step with the safety diver and float at the surface in a loose group holding a line. The sharks come up from the blue, circle, and pass within a few feet. There is no bottom, only blue and the shapes moving through it. - Free dives. The safety diver drops down to the sharks and the crew points out behavior from the surface. If you are a confident free diver you can go a little deeper with guidance. - Rotate and repeat. With six guests there is rarely a wait, but the crew brings everyone up for water, a breather and a look at whatever else has shown up: tuna, mahi mahi, a pod of dolphins, a tiger shark on a lucky day. - Back to Haleʻiwa. The ride home is downwind. Everyone is quiet for the first five minutes and then nobody can stop talking. ## Prices and what you get The cageless snorkel is from $100 per person plus tax and booking fees, which covers two hours on the water, all the gear, the safety diver and the briefing. The cage tour is from $90 and runs the same length with a cage instead of a diver, from age 5. For what it delivers, this is one of the best values on the island; most two-hour boat trips off Waikiki cost the same without the sharks. ## Who it’s for (and who should skip it) Ages 12 to 75 who are comfortable in deep water. You do not need to be an athlete; you float with fins on, near the boat, holding a line. Teenagers love it. So do grandparents who used to snorkel. Skip it if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, or are not comfortable in open water with no bottom in sight. If the last one describes you or your child, book the cage tour instead and you will still see the sharks. ## Where to check in and how to get there Haleʻiwa Small Boat Harbor is at the north end of Haleʻiwa town, on the makai (ocean) side of Kamehameha Highway just past the famous bridge. From Waikiki take the H-1 west to the H-2 north, then Kamehameha Highway through Wahiawā and down to the coast: about an hour with no traffic, 75 to 90 minutes after 7 am. Parking at the harbor is free but fills up; arrive early. If you do not have a car, a rideshare each way is $60 to $80. A rental car for the day is usually cheaper and lets you stay on the North Shore afterward, which you should. ## Best time to go Time of day. The first departure. The North Shore is flattest and the water clearest before the trade winds build around 11 am. Time of year. May through October for calm seas and the best visibility. The sharks are there all year, and winter trips run on the days the surf allows, but November to March brings cancellations and rougher rides. Winter trips that do go out sometimes come with humpback whale song in the water, which is its own reason to go. ## Local tips before you book - Take the seasickness pill. Open-ocean drift plus swell. Non-drowsy, an hour before. - Get in the water fast. The deck is where people feel queasy; the water is where they feel fine. - Keep your hands in. The one rule the crew repeats. Arms by your sides, float, look. - Make it a North Shore day. Shark boat at 8, garlic shrimp in Haleʻiwa at 11, Waimea Bay or the beachfront ATV ride in the afternoon, shave ice on the way home. - Book early in summer. Six seats a boat sells out a week or more ahead. For the whole island, see our things to do in Waikiki guide. ## The verdict If you only leave Waikiki once, make it for this. A six-person boat, a safety diver in the water with you, and a dozen sharks in cobalt-blue water three miles off the North Shore. Book the first boat in summer, take the pill, and get in. Included: - 2 hours on the water with a captain and a trained in-water safety diver - Mask, snorkel, fins and a wetsuit top if you want one - A briefing on shark biology, behavior and how to move in the water - A small-group boat capped at six guests Not included: - Tax and booking fees - Transportation from Waikiki (about an hour each way by car) - Photos and video, unless the day's package includes them - Gratuity for the crew Restrictions: - Ages 12 to 75 for the cageless snorkel; the cage tour takes ages 5 and up - You need to be comfortable floating in deep open water with a mask and snorkel; no swim test, but this is not a pool - Not for pregnant guests or anyone with a heart condition - Not wheelchair accessible - Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure; the captain cancels for big surf and you are refunded in full Frequently asked questions: Q: Is swimming with sharks on Oʻahu safe? A: The North Shore shark tours have run for two decades without a guest injury from a shark. The species you meet, Galapagos and sandbar sharks, are not interested in people; they are curious, cautious and well fed. A trained safety diver is in the water with you reading the sharks' behavior, and the group stays together at the surface near the boat. Q: Cage or no cage? A: No cage if you are 12 or older and comfortable in the ocean. You see more, you move freely, and the experience is far more memorable. The cage tour is the right choice for kids 5 to 11, for nervous swimmers, and for anyone who wants to watch through a window with their feet on a platform. We link both on this page. Q: Which sharks will we see? A: Galapagos sharks and sandbar sharks almost every trip, often a dozen or more. Tiger sharks show up a few times a month, and the crew will tell you the day's conditions. Winter adds the chance of hearing humpback whales singing through the water. Q: Where does the tour leave from? A: Haleʻiwa Small Boat Harbor on the North Shore. From Waikiki it is about an hour by car via the H-1 and H-2 freeways, longer in afternoon traffic. Leave early and plan to spend the day on the North Shore afterward. Q: How much does the shark snorkel cost? A: From $100 per person for the cageless snorkel, plus tax and booking fees. The cage tour is from $90. Both are two hours. Q: Do I need to be a strong swimmer? A: You need to be comfortable in deep water with a mask and snorkel. You float at the surface with the group near the boat; the fins do most of the work. If you are unsure, the cage tour removes the question. Q: Will I get seasick? A: Possibly. The boat drifts in open ocean three miles out, and in winter there is swell. Take non-drowsy motion-sickness medicine an hour before departure, eat a light breakfast, and get in the water as soon as you can; being in the water is calmer than being on deck. Q: What is the best season? A: May through October, when the North Shore is flat and the water is its clearest blue. The tours run in winter too, but the big surf season means more cancellations and bumpier boat rides. The sharks are there all year. Q: Can I bring a camera? A: Yes. A GoPro or a waterproof phone case is ideal. Ask the crew about their photo packages; the safety diver often shoots from below, which is the angle you cannot get yourself. Q: What is the cancellation policy? A: Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure. If the captain cancels for surf or weather, you are refunded in full or rebooked. URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/ja/north-shore-shark-snorkel/ Rank on our list: #2 Where: ハレイワ, ノースショア Price: from $100 Duration: 2時間 Season: 通年。 A: はい。 --- ## Waikiki Turtle Canyon Snorkel: The Top-Rated Turtle Trip From Kewalo Basin URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/waikiki-turtle-snorkel/ Rank on our list: #3 Where: Honolulu, Kewalo Basin Price: from $79 Duration: About 2 hours Season: Daily, year round Best time: A morning departure for the calmest water and the clearest visibility; December to April for whales on the ride home Ages: 3 and up Group size: Up to 40 guests on a 50-foot custom snorkel boat, with in-water guides Check-in: Kewalo Basin Harbor, 1125 Ala Moana Blvd, Slip B1 (Pier B), Honolulu (10 minutes from Waikiki) Guest rating: 5 out of 5 from 9122 reviews Book: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/livingoceanscuba/items/284519/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=fathom1k&ref=waikikiadventureguide&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no Two hours from Kewalo Basin to Turtle Canyon, the reef off Waikiki where green sea turtles come to be cleaned. Snorkel guides in the water with you, all gear, snacks and drinks, ages 3 and up. A perfect 5.0 across more than 9,000 reviews. Highlights: - The highest-rated, most-reviewed Turtle Canyon trip on Oʻahu: a perfect 5.0 across more than 9,000 reviews - Snorkel guides in the water with you and a short lesson on the gear first, so first-timers and kids are looked after - Green sea turtles on most trips; they surface to breathe right beside the boat, so non-swimmers see them too - A cruise along the Waikiki coast with Diamond Head ahead, and spinner dolphins, flying fish and (December to April) humpback whales on the way - A 50-foot boat built for snorkeling: shade and sun, upper-deck seating, a bow to lie on, and a restroom on board - From $79, ages 3 and up, daily from Kewalo Basin, ten minutes from any Waikiki hotel Turtle Canyon is the reef a mile off Waikiki where Honolulu’s green sea turtles go to rest and have their shells cleaned by reef fish. Every snorkel boat on the south shore goes there, so the trip you pick comes down to one thing: the crew who gets in the water with you. This page covers the Turtle Canyon trip we book, why its guides make the difference, what it costs, and how to fit it into a Waikiki morning. ## Why this made our list There are more than a dozen Turtle Canyon trips out of Kewalo Basin and Waikiki, from sailing catamarans with a bar to tiny six-seat boats. We judged them on the experience in the water, which is what you are paying for, and this one is in a league of its own: a perfect 5.0 rating across more than 9,000 reviews. That is not a typo, and it is the deepest review record of any snorkel trip on Oʻahu. The reason is the guides. They give a short lesson on the gear before anyone gets in, then swim with the group, point out turtles resting under ledges and the octopus most people swim straight past, and keep an eye on kids and first-timers. The boat is a 50-foot custom snorkel vessel with real shade, an upper deck, a bow to lie on and a restroom, so the hour you spend out of the water is comfortable too. And the turtles cooperate. They surface to breathe right beside the boat, so even the guests who stay on deck see them. ### How it compares The sailing catamarans that load off Waikiki Beach make Turtle Canyon a stop on a sail and include a bar; they are good if the sail matters more than the snorkel, and we feature one for the sunset sail. The very small boats are quieter on the water but cost more, and none of them comes close to this crew’s review record. For a Turtle Canyon snorkel where the guides make the morning, this is the one. ## What the Turtle Canyon snorkel is like About two hours dock to dock. Here is how it goes. - Check in at the boat. Slip B1 on Pier B at Kewalo Basin, 30 minutes before departure. - Cruise the Waikiki coast. Out of the harbor and east along Ala Moana and Waikiki with Diamond Head ahead. Grab a spot on the bow or the upper deck. - Gear lesson. At anchor over the reef the crew walks everyone through the mask, snorkel and fins and what to expect in the water. - Turtle Canyon. You slide in with the guides. Green sea turtles drift up from the reef to breathe and settle back down to be cleaned. Float still and they pass within arm’s reach. - The reef. Butterflyfish, parrotfish, schools of goatfish over the sand, the occasional eel or octopus that the guides find for you. - Snacks and the ride back. Cold drinks and snacks in the sun, with an eye out for spinner dolphins, flying fish and, December to April, humpback whales. - Back at Kewalo Basin. You are in Waikiki by lunch. ## Prices and what you get From $79 per person plus tax and booking fees, covering about two hours on the water, all snorkel gear and flotation, in-water guides, juices, sodas, water and snacks. Harbor parking is extra at $2 an hour. For a guided snorkel with this rating, it is one of the best values in Waikiki. ## Who it’s for (and who should skip it) Families with kids from age 3, first-time snorkelers, couples, grandparents who would rather watch from the deck. Anyone who wants to see Waikiki’s turtles with people who know the reef. Skip it if you want a cocktail sail with a snorkel on the side; book a beach catamaran instead. And skip it if you want a nearly private boat; the small six-seat boats exist, at a higher price. ## Where to check in and how to get there Kewalo Basin Harbor, 1125 Ala Moana Boulevard, Slip B1 on Pier B. From Waikiki it is a ten-minute drive or rideshare, or a 30-minute walk through Ala Moana Beach Park. Parking is limited at busy times and costs $2 an hour, paid by scanning the QR code on the lot signs, so the crew suggests a rideshare. Your confirmation email includes driving directions and a harbor map. ## Best time to go Time of day. Morning, for the flattest water and the clearest visibility before the trade winds build. Midday trips have warmer water and brighter light on the reef. Time of year. Year round. The turtles live at Turtle Canyon in every month. December through April adds humpback whales on the ride home; summer brings the warmest water. ## Local tips before you book - Float, do not swim. Turtles come to still snorkelers and leave fast ones. Hang at the surface and let the reef come to you. - Reef-safe sunscreen only. It is the law in Hawaii. - Take the seasickness pill before you arrive. It has to be in your system to work. - Pair it with parasailing. Same harbor. Fly at 8, snorkel at 10, and you have done the two best south-shore adventures before lunch. For the rest of the week, see our things to do in Waikiki guide. - Rideshare, do not drive. Kewalo parking fills at peak times. ## The verdict The best way to see Waikiki’s turtles: guides in the water with you, a comfortable boat, turtles on most trips, from $79, and a perfect 5.0 across more than 9,000 reviews. Book a morning departure, float still, and keep ten feet from the honu. Included: - About 2 hours on the water with a licensed captain and in-water snorkel guides - Mask, snorkel, fins and flotation, with a short lesson before you get in - Cold juices, sodas and water - Light snacks on the ride back Not included: - Tax and booking fees - Harbor parking ($2 an hour, paid by QR code) - Gratuity for the crew Restrictions: - Ages 3 and up - Check in at the boat 30 minutes before departure; the boat leaves on time - Touching, chasing or feeding turtles is illegal in Hawaii; stay 10 feet away - Free cancellation up to 48 hours before the trip (7 days for private charters) - The crew cancels for unsafe weather or heavy rain and contacts you by email and text to reschedule Frequently asked questions: Q: What is Turtle Canyon? A: A reef about a mile off Waikiki where green sea turtles (honu) come to rest and have their shells cleaned by reef fish. It is the most famous turtle spot on Oʻahu and every snorkel boat on the south shore goes there. What makes a trip great is the crew and the guides, which is where this one stands out. Q: Will we see turtles? A: On most trips, yes. The turtles come up to breathe every few minutes and are often visible from the deck, so even guests who stay on the boat see them. No wild-animal trip can promise sightings, but this reef is as close to a sure thing as it gets. Q: Where does it leave from? A: Kewalo Basin Harbor at 1125 Ala Moana Boulevard, Slip B1 on Pier B, a ten-minute drive or rideshare from Waikiki. Parking is limited at peak times and costs $2 an hour, paid by QR code on the lot signs, so a rideshare is the easy way. Driving directions come in your confirmation email. Q: How much does the Turtle Canyon snorkel cost? A: From $79 per person plus tax and booking fees, which covers about two hours on the water, all snorkel gear, in-water guides, drinks and snacks. Q: Can kids and beginners snorkel? A: Yes. The tour takes children from age 3, the crew gives a short lesson on the gear before anyone gets in, flotation is provided, and the guides swim with the group. It is one of the best first snorkels on the island. Q: What if I do not want to get in the water? A: Come anyway. The turtles surface right beside the boat, the ride along Waikiki is beautiful, and there is shade, seating and a restroom on board. Q: Will I get seasick? A: The water off Waikiki is usually calm. If you are not used to boats, take motion-sickness medicine before you arrive (it has to be in your system to work) and sit toward the back of the boat. Q: Can I touch the turtles? A: No. Green sea turtles are protected by state and federal law. Keep 10 feet away, never chase or block one, and let them come to you. The guides will show you how to float still. A: いいえ。 --- ## West Oʻahu Dolphin Safari: Swim With Wild Spinner Dolphins, Snorkel With Turtles URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/oahu-dolphin-snorkel-tour/ Rank on our list: #4 Where: Waiʻanae, West Side Price: from $215 Duration: 3+ hours Season: Year round; whales December to April Best time: The 7 am departure, any month, when the dolphins are resting close to shore and the water is glassy Ages: 10 and up suggested Group size: 8 guests on shared trips (private charters up to 16) Check-in: Waiʻanae Small Boat Harbor, West Side (about 1 hour from Waikiki) Guest rating: 4.9 out of 5 from 1898 reviews Book: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/wildsidespecialtytours/items/474711/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=fathom1k&ref=waikikiadventureguide&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no Three hours on an eight-guest boat along the wild west coast with marine naturalists: wild spinner dolphins in the morning bays, guided snorkeling with turtles on the reef, and humpback whales in winter. The dolphin trip the island's biologists book. Highlights: - The leeward coast is where Oʻahu's spinner dolphins rest every morning, and this trip leaves at 7 am to meet them in glassy water - Eight guests and naturalist or biologist guides, so the day is about the animals, not the headcount - Guided snorkeling on a reef with green sea turtles, with gear and flotation included - Humpback whales December through April, often close enough to hear them breathe - Fresh pineapple, snacks, juice and a real sandwich on the late trip - 4.9 stars across nearly 1,900 reviews, the top-rated dolphin trip on the island Oʻahu’s spinner dolphins spend their nights hunting offshore and their mornings resting in the calm bays of the leeward coast, which is why every dolphin tour on the island leaves from the west side at dawn. The difference between them is the size of the boat and who is standing next to you explaining what you are looking at. This page covers the small-boat safari we book, why the early start is worth it, what it costs, and how to make the drive from Waikiki painless. ## Why this made our list The west-side dolphin fleet runs from two harbors, Ko Olina and Waiʻanae, and ranges from 50-person catamarans with buffet lunches to six-person inflatables. We wanted the one that treats the animals as the point. This operation runs an eight-guest boat with naturalist and biologist guides, follows the federal 50-yard rule for resting spinner dolphins without being asked, and still manages to put you closer to wild dolphins than anywhere else on Oʻahu because the dolphins come to the boat. The second half of the morning is a guided snorkel on a reef with green sea turtles, with a guide in the water pointing things out. In winter the run along the coast turns into a whale watch, and the west side is the best humpback water on the island. It holds 4.9 stars across nearly 1,900 reviews and sells out a week or more ahead in winter. ### How it compares The big Ko Olina catamarans are comfortable, include lunch and have Waikiki bus pickup, and they are the right call if you cannot drive or want a lazy day; they also carry 40 or more people. The small inflatable boats are fast and fun and the cheapest option, with a rougher ride and no shade. The eight-guest boat with naturalists sits between them on price and ahead of both on the experience. ## What the dolphin safari is like Three-plus hours dock to dock. Here is how it goes. - Check in at Waiʻanae Harbor at 7 am. Waivers, a look at the gear, coffee if you brought it. The harbor is small and the boat is easy to find. - Run the coast. The leeward shore is glassy at this hour. The guides talk through what spinner dolphins do and why the boat will behave the way it does around them. - Dolphins. The captain finds the resting pod, usually within the first half hour, and idles at the legal distance. The dolphins decide the rest; most mornings they come to the bow, spin, and ride the pressure wave for minutes at a time. - Whales, in season. December to April the run between bays becomes a whale watch, with humpbacks breaching and tail-slapping along the coast. - Snorkel stop. The boat anchors on a reef with green sea turtles and the guides go in with you. Gear, flotation and a lesson for first-timers. - Snacks and the ride home. Fresh pineapple on the bow, the Waiʻanae mountains lit up, and a crew that answers every question. ## Prices and what you get From $215 per person plus tax and booking fees, covering three-plus hours with naturalist guides, the dolphin and (in season) whale watching, the guided turtle snorkel with gear, and snacks and juice. The 11:15 trip adds a sandwich. Private charters for up to 16 guests are available for families with younger kids. ## Who it’s for (and who should skip it) Anyone who wants to see wild dolphins with people who can explain them: couples, families with kids 10 and up, photographers, repeat visitors who have done the big boat and want the real version. Skip it if you cannot get to Waiʻanae for 7 am and do not want the later trip, if your kids are under 10 (book the private charter instead), or if a buffet and a bar matter more than the animals. ## Where to check in and how to get there Waiʻanae Small Boat Harbor is on Farrington Highway on the leeward coast. From Waikiki take the H-1 west all the way to its end, then Farrington Highway north through Nānākuli and Māʻili to Waiʻanae. At 5:45 am it is an hour; after 7 the H-1 fills and the drive is 75 to 90 minutes. Parking at the harbor is free. There is no public transit that works for a 7 am check-in; a rental car or a rideshare (about $70 each way) is the way. ## Best time to go Time of day. 7 am. The dolphins are resting close to shore, the water is glass, and the light is soft. Time of year. Dolphins year round. December through April for whales, with January to March the peak. Summer brings the warmest water and the best snorkel visibility. ## Local tips before you book - Book 10-plus days out. The cancellation window is 10 days and the eight seats sell out. - Sleep in Ko Olina the night before. It cuts the drive to 20 minutes and the resort lagoons are a good afternoon. - Stay on the bow. The dolphins ride the pressure wave at the front; that is the seat. - Make a west-side day of it. Dolphins at 7, Ko Olina lagoons or Mākaha Beach at 11, a late lunch in Kapolei, and the H-1 home before rush hour. - Winter is two trips in one. The same boat, dolphins plus whales, for the same price. For the whole island, see our things to do in Waikiki guide. ## The verdict The best dolphin morning on Oʻahu: eight guests, biologists on board, wild spinners on the bow and turtles on the reef, with whales thrown in from December to April. Set the alarm, drive west in the dark, and be at Waiʻanae Harbor at 7. Included: - 3-plus hours on the water with a Coast Guard-licensed captain and naturalist guides - Snorkel gear, flotation devices and a guided snorkel stop - Fresh pineapple, chips and cookies; croissants on the 7 am trip, chicken-salad sandwiches on the 11:15 trip - Juice and water Not included: - Tax and booking fees - Transportation from Waikiki (about an hour each way; leave by 5:45 am for the 7 am trip) - Gratuity for the crew Restrictions: - Ages 10 and up suggested on shared trips; younger kids can join on a private charter - Weight limit of about 250 lb per guest for the snorkel gear and swim step - A four-guest minimum on shared trips; choose dates and times with other guests already booked if you can - Cancellation requires 10 days' notice; book this one with intent - Dietary needs (vegan, gluten-free) need 24 hours' notice Frequently asked questions: Q: Will we see dolphins? A: Almost every morning. Spinner dolphins feed offshore at night and come into the calm bays of the leeward coast to rest after dawn, which is why the 7 am trip is the one to book. The crew knows the bays and reads the water; sightings are the norm, not the exception, though no wild-animal trip can promise. Q: Can we swim with the dolphins? A: Hawaii's federal rule keeps swimmers 50 yards from resting spinner dolphins, and this operator follows it, which is part of why we trust them. You watch from the boat as close as the law allows, and the dolphins often choose to ride the bow. The snorkel stop is on a reef with turtles and fish, not in the dolphin bays. Q: Where does the tour leave from? A: Waiʻanae Small Boat Harbor on the leeward (west) coast. From Waikiki it is about an hour on the H-1 west and Farrington Highway when the roads are empty, which they are at 5:45 am. Allow 75 to 90 minutes for the 11:15 trip. Q: 7 am or 11:15 am? A: 7 am if dolphins are the point: that is when they are resting close to shore and the water is flattest. 11:15 if you cannot face the alarm; the later trip still sees dolphins on many days, has the better lunch, and the turtle snorkel is just as good. Q: How much does the dolphin tour cost? A: From $215 per person plus tax and booking fees for three-plus hours with guides, snorkel gear and food. Private charters for up to 16 are available for families with younger kids. Q: Is there whale watching? A: From December through April, yes. The west coast is one of the best humpback corridors on Oʻahu and the trip becomes a dolphin and whale safari. January to March is peak. Q: Is it suitable for kids? A: The shared trips suggest ages 10 and up because of the early start, the open-ocean snorkel and the three-hour length. Families with younger children can book a private charter and set the pace. Q: Will I get seasick? A: The leeward coast is the calmest water on Oʻahu, which is why the dolphins rest there. Still, take non-drowsy motion-sickness medicine an hour before if you are prone to it. Q: What is the cancellation policy? A: Ten days' notice for a refund, which is stricter than most tours on this site. Weather cancellations by the captain are refunded or rebooked in full. Q: Why not a dolphin tour with Waikiki pickup? A: There are good ones, and they are convenient. They also carry bigger groups and spend an hour or more of the day on a bus. If you can drive yourself to Waiʻanae for 7 am, the eight-guest boat with naturalists is a better morning for roughly the same money. URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/ja/oahu-dolphin-snorkel-tour/ Rank on our list: #4 Where: ワイアナエ, ウエストサイド(西海岸) Price: from $215 Duration: 約3時間以上 Season: 通年(ザトウクジラは12月〜4月) Best time: 月を問わず朝7時発の便。 --- ## Kailua Kayak Tour to the Mokulua Islands: Guided Paddle, Snorkel and Picnic URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/kailua-kayak-mokulua-islands/ Rank on our list: #5 Where: Kailua, Windward Side Price: from $249 Duration: 5.5 hours Season: Year round; calmest April to October Best time: A morning start, April through October, before the trade winds build across Kailua Bay Ages: 13 and up (teens with a parent in a double kayak) Group size: 8 guests per guide Check-in: Kailua Beach, Windward Side (about 35 minutes from Waikiki over the Pali) Guest rating: 4.9 out of 5 from 4354 reviews Book: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/kailuasailboards/items/504/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=fathom1k&ref=waikikiadventureguide&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no Paddle from Kailua Beach across the bluest water on Oʻahu to the Mokulua Islands, land on Moku Nui with a permitted guide, snorkel the reef and eat a picnic lunch on the beach. Five and a half hours, eight guests, the day people come back to Kailua for. Highlights: - The Mokulua Islands are a seabird sanctuary with landing allowed only on Moku Nui and only with a permit; this is one of the few operators that holds one - Five and a half hours: the paddle out, a landing and beach time on Moku Nui, snorkeling over the reef and turtle grounds, and a picnic lunch - Eight guests per guide, with top-end double kayaks, gear, dry bags and all the accessories included - Kailua Bay has the bluest, clearest water on Oʻahu and the view back to the Koʻolau cliffs is the best on the island - Thirty-five minutes from Waikiki over the Pali Highway, no tour bus required - 4.9 stars across more than 4,300 reviews, the most-reviewed adventure on this list The Mokulua Islands are the two green cones you have seen in every Oʻahu photo, floating off Lanikai in water that looks edited. Most visitors see them from the beach. The right way to see them is from a kayak, and then from the beach on Moku Nui itself, which only a handful of operators are permitted to land on. This page covers the guided tour we book, who should do it, what it costs, and how to beat the trade winds. ## Why this made our list Kailua is Oʻahu’s kayaking capital, and a dozen shops will rent you a boat. Only a few hold a commercial landing permit for Moku Nui, and the difference between paddling past the Mokes and standing on them is the whole day. This operator has the permit, runs eight guests per guide, uses top-end double kayaks, and feeds you a real lunch on the island. It has earned 4.9 stars across more than 4,300 reviews, the deepest review history of any adventure on this list. The route is the other reason. You launch from Kailua Beach, paddle along the reef where the turtles feed, cross three-quarters of a mile of blue to Moku Nui, land on the small beach, snorkel in the lee and eat lunch looking back at the Koʻolau cliffs. Then you paddle home. It is five and a half hours and it feels like a full expedition. ### How it compares Self-guided rentals are cheaper and fine for Flat Island or a Lanikai cruise, but they cannot land on the Mokes and the open crossing catches people out when the wind comes up. Other guided Kailua tours visit the same islands with bigger groups or without the landing. The permitted landing, the eight-guest cap and the lunch are why this one is on the list; the same operator’s easier Flat Island paddle is the second button for families with younger kids. ## What the Mokulua kayak tour is like Five and a half hours. Here is how it goes. - Check in near Kailua Beach Park. Morning. Waivers, dry bags, a paddling lesson on the sand and a look at the day’s wind. - Launch into Kailua Bay. The first stretch follows the reef toward Lanikai, with turtles grazing beneath the boats. - The crossing. Three-quarters of a mile of open bay to Moku Nui, with the guide setting the line. In the morning it is a glide; this is why you start early. - Land on Moku Nui. The permitted beach on the island’s lee side. Seabirds overhead, a tide pool on the far side, and the view back to Lanikai that you came for. - Snorkel and lunch. Reef fish and turtles in the sheltered water, then a picnic lunch on the sand. - Paddle home. Downwind if the trades have arrived, back along the reef to Kailua Beach. - Kailua town. Shower at the beach park, then shave ice or a plate lunch in town before the drive back over the Pali. ## Prices and what you get From $249 per person plus tax, including the guide, the permitted landing, double kayaks with all accessories, snorkel gear, dry bags and lunch. Private tours start at $339 per person. The Flat Island paddle and beach day is the shorter, cheaper, inside-the-reef alternative. ## Who it’s for (and who should skip it) Fit beginners and up, ages 13 and over, who want to earn the view. Couples, friends, families with teenagers, anyone who finds a bus tour too passive. Skip it if you are not comfortable in the ocean or cannot paddle for an hour at a stretch; book the Flat Island paddle instead. Kids under 13 go to Flat Island too. ## Where to check in and how to get there Kailua Beach is on the windward side, 35 to 40 minutes from Waikiki: the H-1 to the Pali Highway, through the tunnels, and down Kailua Road to the beach park. The check-in shop is a short walk from the sand and the exact address comes with your confirmation. Parking at Kailua Beach Park is free but fills by mid-morning on weekends; arrive early. A rideshare from Waikiki runs about $40 each way, and the drive over the Pali is one of the prettiest on the island. ## Best time to go Time of day. Morning. Kailua Bay is glassy at 8 and choppy by 1 when the trade winds fill in. Time of year. April through October for the lightest winds and the calmest crossings. Winter trips run on the days the wind allows, and the fallback is the Flat Island paddle inside the reef. ## Local tips before you book - Cover up. Five hours on the water with no shade. Rash guard, hat with a strap, reef-safe sunscreen, reapply on the island. - Shoes that get wet. The Moku Nui landing is sand, but the tide pool walk is lava rock. - Go early in the week. Kailua Beach parking on a Saturday is its own adventure. - Add Lanikai Pillbox. The 30-minute hike above Lanikai looks down on the exact water you just paddled; do it the next morning at sunrise. - Make it a windward day. Kayak in the morning, Kailua town for lunch, Waimānalo Beach or the Byodo-In Temple in the afternoon. For the rest of the week, see our things to do in Waikiki guide. ## The verdict The best full day on the windward side: a real paddle across the bluest water on Oʻahu, a permitted landing on an island almost nobody gets to stand on, turtles on the reef and lunch on the sand. Start early, cover up, and bring your camera in a dry bag. Included: - 5.5 hours with a guide, permitted landing on Moku Nui - Double kayaks, paddles, life jackets, dry bags and seat backs - Snorkel gear - A complete picnic lunch and water Not included: - Tax - Transportation from Waikiki (about 35 minutes each way) - Gratuity for the guide Restrictions: - Ages 13 and up; 13 to 17 must paddle a double kayak with a parent or guardian - This is a real paddle of about a mile each way across open bay; fit beginners are welcome, but you should be comfortable in the ocean - Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure - The guide cancels for high wind or surf; the easier Flat Island paddle is the usual substitute Frequently asked questions: Q: What are the Mokulua Islands? A: The twin islets, Moku Nui and Moku Iki, that sit about three-quarters of a mile off Lanikai Beach and appear in every photo of the windward side. They are a state seabird sanctuary; Moku Iki is closed completely and Moku Nui allows landing only on its beach, with commercial landings restricted to a few permitted operators. This is one of them. Q: How hard is the paddle? A: About a mile each way from Kailua Beach, across a bay that is calm in the morning and choppy by afternoon. Fit beginners do it every day in double kayaks. It is work on the way home if the trade winds have come up, which is why the tour starts in the morning. Q: Where does the tour start? A: Kailua Beach, on the windward side. From Waikiki take the H-1 to the Pali Highway, through the tunnels and down into Kailua, about 35 to 40 minutes. The check-in shop is a short walk from the beach park; your confirmation has the exact address. Q: How much does the Mokulua kayak tour cost? A: From $249 per person plus tax for the 5.5-hour guided tour with kayaks, gear, the permitted landing and lunch. Private tours start at $339. The shorter, easier Flat Island paddle with a beach day is less. Q: Can kids come? A: From age 13, paddling a double kayak with a parent or guardian. Younger kids should do the Flat Island paddle instead, which stays inside the reef. Q: Will we see turtles? A: Usually. The reef between Kailua and the Mokes is a turtle feeding ground and the guide knows where they graze. Snorkeling in the lee of Moku Nui adds reef fish and the occasional ray. Q: What about wind and weather? A: The windward side is the trade-wind side, and some days the bay is too rough to cross. The guide decides in the morning, and the usual fallback is the Flat Island paddle inside the reef. Spring and summer have the lightest winds. Q: Can I rent a kayak and go on my own? A: You can rent and paddle to Flat Island or along Lanikai, but you cannot land on the Mokulua Islands without a permit, and the crossing is further than it looks. For the Mokes, go guided. Q: Is lunch really included? A: Yes, a full picnic lunch eaten on the beach at Moku Nui, plus water. Tell the operator about dietary needs when you book. Q: What is the cancellation policy? A: Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure. Weather cancellations are refunded or switched to another tour. URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/ja/kailua-kayak-mokulua-islands/ Rank on our list: #5 Where: カイルア, ウィンドワード(東海岸) Price: from $249 Duration: 約5.5時間 Season: 通年(最も穏やかなのは4月〜10月) Best time: 4月〜10月の午前スタート。 A: 1人$249〜(税別)。 A: はい。 --- ## Waikiki Sunset Sail: Catamaran Off the Sand With an Open Bar URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/waikiki-sunset-sail/ Rank on our list: #6 Where: Waikiki, Waikiki Price: from $80 Duration: 1.5 hours Season: Every evening, year round Best time: Any clear evening; December to April for whale spouts at golden hour, Fridays for the fireworks afterward Ages: All ages (21+ for the bar) Group size: Up to 49 guests on a sailing catamaran Check-in: On the sand in front of the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort, 2169 Kalia Rd (walk from your hotel) Guest rating: 4.9 out of 5 from 968 reviews Book: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/waikikirigger/items/6364/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=fathom1k&ref=waikikiadventureguide&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no Walk down the beach, wade to the catamaran, and sail out past Diamond Head as the sun drops and the Waikiki skyline lights up behind you. Ninety minutes, open bar, no harbor and no bus. The easiest great evening in Waikiki. Highlights: - Loads directly off the sand in front of the Outrigger Reef: no harbor, no shuttle, a ten-minute walk from most Waikiki hotels - Ninety minutes under sail with the whole south shore in view, Diamond Head going gold and the city lights coming on behind you - Open bar included: local craft beers, wine, champagne, seltzers, soft drinks and the house cocktail - A 49-passenger sailing catamaran with a netted bow to sit on, a sound system and a real restroom - Humpback whales at golden hour from December to April; turtles and the occasional dolphin any month - 4.9 stars across nearly a thousand reviews, the top-rated sunset sail on the beach The Waikiki sunset cruise is the one trip almost every visitor takes, and most of them take it from a harbor after a bus ride. The better version loads straight off the sand in front of your hotel: you walk down the beach barefoot, wade to the catamaran, and sail out as the sun drops behind the Waiʻanae mountains and Diamond Head turns the color of a mango. This page covers the beach catamaran we book, why boarding from the sand matters, what it costs, and how to pick the right night. ## Why this made our list Half a dozen boats sell sunset cruises in Waikiki. The big motor yachts leave from Kewalo Basin or Aloha Tower with buffets and shows, and they are fine if dinner is the point. The sailing catamarans that pull up on Waikiki Beach are the local’s version: smaller, quieter, no bus, and you are under sail with the wind doing the work. Of the beach catamarans, this one wins on the things that matter for 90 minutes: an open bar that is actually included, a wide netted bow to sit on, a clean restroom, a crew that keeps the music at a reasonable level, and a 4.9-star rating across nearly a thousand reviews. It boards in front of the Outrigger Reef at the quiet Fort DeRussy end of the beach, which means less chaos at check-in and a straight shot out past the reef. ### How it compares The dinner-cruise yachts from the harbor cost two to three times as much, carry hundreds of people and include a meal and a show; they are a different product. The other beach catamarans along Waikiki are similar boats with similar routes, and the differences are the bar policy, the crowd and the boarding spot. The included open bar and the Outrigger Reef loading beach are why this one is on the list. The same boat runs a morning Turtle Canyon snorkel sail, linked as the second button on this page. ## What the sunset sail is like Ninety minutes. Here is how it goes. - Check in on the beach. At the operator’s office in the Outrigger Reef, 20 minutes before departure. Sandals off, waiver signed, wristband on. - Wade and board. The catamaran noses onto the sand. You walk through knee-deep water to the ladder and the crew hands you aboard. This is the part people photograph. - Motor through the reef, then sail. The engines push through the surf line, the sails go up, and the engines go off. Grab a drink and claim a spot on the bow net. - Out past Diamond Head. The boat sails east along the beach, with the hotels, the Royal Hawaiian’s pink walls and the crater lit from the side. Turtles surface off the reef; whales spout in winter. - Sunset. The captain turns the bow west for the sun going down behind the Waiʻanae range. Everyone goes quiet for a minute. - The lights come on. The sail home faces the beach as the hotels and the Diamond Head lighthouse light up. Tiki torches, the sound of the surf, a last drink. - Back onto the sand. The catamaran runs up the beach and you wade ashore with the whole evening ahead of you. ## Prices and what you get From $80 per person plus tax and booking fees, with the open bar included for the full sail. Kamaʻāina and military rates are available from the operator. The Friday fireworks sail and the morning turtle snorkel sail are separate trips on the same boat. For a sunset with drinks included and no transportation, nothing else in Waikiki comes close on price. ## Who it’s for (and who should skip it) Everyone. Couples, families, groups of friends, solo travelers who want to meet people, grandparents who can manage a few steps through the water. It is the easiest evening on this list. Skip it if you need step-free boarding; the beach launch is through the water. If you want dinner on board, book a harbor dinner cruise instead and come back to this one for the sail. ## Where to check in and how to get there The Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort is at 2169 Kalia Road, at the Fort DeRussy end of Waikiki Beach, next to the Halekulani. From the Hilton Hawaiian Village it is a five-minute walk; from the Moana Surfrider or the Hyatt about fifteen along the beach. Check in at the operator’s beach office inside the resort. There is no parking to worry about and no shuttle; if you are staying outside Waikiki, a rideshare to the Outrigger Reef is the move. ## Best time to go Time of day. It is a sunset sail, so the time is set by the sun: roughly 5 pm in winter and 5:30 in summer. Arrive 20 minutes early. Time of year. Every evening of the year. December through April for whale spouts at golden hour. Summer for the longest, warmest evenings. Fridays for the fireworks on the beach afterward. ## Local tips before you book - Sit on the bow net. It is the best seat and it gets splashed; put your phone in your pocket when the boat turns. - Eat first. There is no food on board. The beach bars at the Outrigger Reef and the Hilton are steps away. - Book a Friday. Sunset sail at 5:30, fireworks over the beach at 7:45 from the sand. The best Waikiki evening for the money. - Bring a layer. The trades after sunset feel cold when you are damp. - Pair it with the morning. Parasail or snorkel Turtle Canyon in the morning, beach all afternoon, sunset sail at 5:30. For the rest of the week, see our things to do in Waikiki guide. ## The verdict The easiest great evening in Waikiki: walk down the beach, wade aboard, open bar, Diamond Head going gold and the lights coming on behind you. Book a Friday, sit on the bow, and eat before you go. Included: - 90 minutes under sail with a licensed captain and crew - Open bar: beer, wine, champagne, hard seltzers, the house cocktail, soda, juice and water - Reef-safe sunscreen and motion-sickness aids on board Not included: - Tax and booking fees - Food (eat before or after; the Outrigger Reef and the beach bars are right there) - Gratuity for the crew Restrictions: - All ages welcome; the bar is 21 and over with ID - Boarding is from the beach through ankle-to-knee-deep water, so it is not wheelchair accessible - Outside alcohol is not allowed - Cancellations and reschedules follow the operator's posted policy; the captain cancels for weather and refunds in full Frequently asked questions: Q: Where does the Waikiki sunset sail leave from? A: From the sand in front of the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort at 2169 Kalia Road, at the Fort DeRussy end of the beach. Check in at the operator's beach office and the crew walks you to the catamaran. Most hotels on the strip are within a ten-minute walk; there is no harbor, bus or shuttle. Q: What time does it sail? A: About 5 to 6:30 pm from October through February and 5:30 to 7 pm from March through September, so you are on the water for sunset and the first lights on the beach. Check the booking calendar for the exact time on your date. Q: How much does it cost? A: From $80 per person plus tax and booking fees, with the open bar included. Kamaʻāina and military rates are available from the operator. Q: Is the open bar really included? A: Yes. Beer, wine, champagne, hard seltzers, the house cocktail and soft drinks are included for the 90 minutes. Outside alcohol is not allowed on board. Q: Can kids come? A: Yes, all ages. Kids love the bow net. The bar is for guests 21 and over. Q: Will I get seasick? A: Waikiki is sheltered and the catamaran is wide and stable, so most people are fine. The crew carries motion-sickness aids, and the stern is the calmest seat. If you are very prone to it, take a non-drowsy pill an hour before. Q: Will we see whales? A: From December through April humpbacks pass the south shore, and a spout or a breach at sunset is common. Turtles surface off the reef in every month. Q: Is there a fireworks cruise? A: On Friday nights the Hilton Hawaiian Village sets off fireworks over the beach, and the same catamaran runs a separate fireworks sail after the sunset sail. Book the sunset sail on a Friday and watch the fireworks from the beach afterward, or book the fireworks sail directly with the operator. Q: What should I wear? A: Beach clothes and a light layer for the trades after sunset. You wade a few steps to board, so wear sandals or go barefoot and carry your shoes. Q: What is the cancellation policy? A: See the operator's policy on the booking page. If the captain cancels for weather, you are refunded or rebooked in full. URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/ja/waikiki-sunset-sail/ Rank on our list: #6 Where: ワイキキ, ワイキキ Price: from $80 Duration: 約1.5時間 Season: 毎晩、通年 Best time: 晴れた夕方ならいつでも。 A: はい。 --- ## North Shore ATV Ride: Beachfront Trails, Farm Animals and a Native Plant to Put in the Ground URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/north-shore-atv-tour/ Rank on our list: #7 Where: Waialua, North Shore Price: from $75 Duration: 1 hour (45 minutes of riding) Season: Year round, rain or shine Best time: Morning before the North Shore heats up, or late afternoon for the light on the water; pair with Waimea Bay or Haleʻiwa town Ages: 8 and up (see the booking page for who may drive) Group size: Small groups, one ATV per driver Check-in: 67-221 Waialua Beach Road, Waialua, North Shore (about 1 hour from Waikiki) Guest rating: 4.9 out of 5 from 7046 reviews Book: https://fareharbor.com/embeds/book/northshorestables/items/354212/?asn=fhdn&asn-ref=fathom1k&ref=waikikiadventureguide&bookable-only=yes&full-items=yes&marketplace=yes&flow=no&branding=no Drive your own ATV along the North Shore coastline on an 80-acre beachfront farm in Waialua: shoreline trails, a restored native dune, a real track, farm animals to meet and a native plant you put in the ground yourself. The only ATV ride on Oʻahu, and a 4.9 across 7,000 reviews. Highlights: - The only ATV experience on Oʻahu: each driver gets their own four-wheel Kawasaki, not a shared side-by-side - Eighty acres of private beachfront in Waialua: shoreline trails, a purpose-built track and the island's only fully restored native dune - Farm animals to meet and feed before the ride, which makes it the easiest North Shore hit for families - Every guest plants a native Hawaiian shoreline plant as part of the state's Mālama Hawaiʻi program; the dunes are being rebuilt one visitor at a time - One hour, from $75, rain or shine, ten minutes from Haleʻiwa town - 4.9 stars across more than 7,000 reviews, the most-reviewed adventure on the North Shore Every North Shore day needs a land stop between the water and the shave ice, and this is the one we send families to: an 80-acre beachfront farm in Waialua where you drive your own four-wheeler along the coast, through a restored native dune and around a proper track, after feeding the animals and planting something that will still be there next time you come. This page covers the ride, who can drive, what it costs, and how to fit it into a North Shore day. ## Why this made our list Oʻahu has a lot of UTV tours and exactly one place where you drive your own ATV with handlebars. That alone would put it on the list. What keeps it there is everything around the ride. The farm sits on the only fully restored Hawaiian shoreline on the island, with 21 native species holding the dunes together, and every guest plants one as part of the state’s Mālama Hawaiʻi program. There are farm animals to meet and feed before you ride, which turns a thrill ride into a family morning. And it holds a 4.9-star rating across more than 7,000 reviews, the biggest review base of anything on the North Shore. The location helps too. Waialua is ten minutes west of Haleʻiwa, so the ride slots into a North Shore day between the shark boat in the morning and Waimea Bay in the afternoon. ### How it compares The windward ranches run UTV tours through movie-famous valleys, and they are spectacular drives with a steering wheel and a guide at the front; they are also two to three times the price and a different side of the island. The only other way to get an ATV under you on Oʻahu is this farm. For a North Shore day, especially with kids, it is the land stop. ## What the ATV ride is like One hour. Here is how it goes. - Check in at the farm. Off Waialua Beach Road, a quiet lane between the old sugar town and the sea. Waivers, helmets, closed-toe shoes checked. - Meet the animals. Goats, pigs, chickens and more at the fence, with feed for the kids. - Plant your plant. Pick a native seedling from the nursery, walk it to the dune, and put it in the ground with the guide explaining what it does. - ATV lesson and practice loop. Automatic four-wheelers, a quick lesson, a few laps on the track to get the feel. - The coastal trail. Out along the shoreline with the ocean beside you, through the restored dune and the organic farm plots, with stops for photos. On a winter day the North Shore surf is breaking right there. - The track. Berms, dips and turns on the farm’s signature course, as fast or as slow as you like. - Back to the barn. Dusty, grinning, ten minutes from Haleʻiwa and the garlic shrimp. ## Prices and what you get From $75 per person plus tax and booking fees for the one-hour experience: your own ATV and helmet, a guide, about 45 minutes of riding, the animal visit and the native plant. It is one of the cheapest guided adventures on Oʻahu and the only one that leaves something behind. ## Who it’s for (and who should skip it) Families with kids 8 and up, first-time riders, anyone who wants a North Shore activity that does not involve the ocean. Teenagers in particular love having their own machine. Skip it if you are pregnant or have a back or neck injury, or if you need the long, wild-valley UTV drive; that is a windward-side trip. ## Where to check in and how to get there 67-221 Waialua Beach Road, Waialua, on the North Shore. From Waikiki take the H-1 west to the H-2 north, then either Kamehameha Highway through Haleʻiwa and west on Waialua Beach Road, or Kaukonahua Road straight into Waialua. About an hour with no traffic, 75 to 90 minutes later in the morning. Parking at the farm is free. If you are coming from the shark boat at Haleʻiwa Harbor, it is ten minutes. ## Best time to go Time of day. Morning before the heat, or late afternoon for the light on the water. Mid-day in summer is hot and dusty. Time of year. It runs every day, rain or shine. Winter days put the big North Shore surf right beside the coastal trail, which is worth seeing from an ATV. ## Local tips before you book - Closed-toe shoes. No exceptions; bring sneakers in the car even if you are coming from the beach. - Bandana for dust. Dry summer days on the track kick it up. - Book the slot after the sharks. Shark snorkel at 8, ATV at 11, lunch in Haleʻiwa at 12:30. - Let the kids plant. The native plant is the part they remember, and the farm sends you a photo if you ask. - Finish at Waimea Bay. Swim in summer, watch the surf in winter, shave ice at Matsumoto’s on the way home. For the rest of the week, see our things to do in Waikiki guide. ## The verdict The best land stop on a North Shore day and the only ATV ride on Oʻahu: your own four-wheeler on the coast, animals for the kids, a plant in the dune, one hour, from $75. Book it right after the shark boat. Included: - A 60-minute experience with about 45 minutes of riding - Your own ATV, helmet and a guide - The farm animal visit and the native plant you put in the ground - Water Not included: - Tax and booking fees - Transportation from Waikiki (about an hour each way) - Photos, unless the day's package includes them - Gratuity for the guide Restrictions: - Ages 8 and up; driver age and size rules are on the booking page - Closed-toe shoes required - Not recommended during pregnancy or with back or neck injuries - Full refund if cancelled 48 or more hours before the start time Frequently asked questions: Q: Is this really the only ATV ride on Oʻahu? A: Yes. Kualoa Ranch and other windward ranches run UTV (side-by-side) tours with a steering wheel and shared seating, which are great but different. This is the only place on the island where you drive your own four-wheel ATV with handlebars. Q: Can kids drive? A: The experience is open from age 8. Who can drive their own ATV depends on age and size, and the booking page spells out the current rules; younger guests ride with a parent or guide where required. Ask when you book. Q: Where is it? A: On Waialua Beach Road in Waialua, the quiet old sugar town just west of Haleʻiwa on the North Shore. From Waikiki take the H-1 west, the H-2 north, and Kamehameha Highway or Kaukonahua Road down to Waialua: about an hour with no traffic, 75 to 90 minutes later in the morning. Q: How much does the ATV ride cost? A: From $75 per person plus tax and booking fees for the one-hour experience, which includes about 45 minutes on the ATV, the animals and the native plant. Q: Is it hard to drive? A: No. The ATVs are automatic, the guide gives a lesson and a practice loop on the track, and the pace is set by the slowest rider. First-timers make up most of the groups. Q: Do we ride on the beach? A: You ride along the shoreline on the farm's coastal trail, with the ocean beside you, and through the restored dune. Hawaii does not allow vehicles on public beach sand, so the ride stays on the private property. Q: What is the native plant thing? A: Part of the state's Mālama Hawaiʻi program: every guest chooses a native Hawaiian shoreline plant and puts it in the ground in the restored dune, which stops erosion and rebuilds the sand. The farm has 21 native species growing along its shoreline because of it. Q: Does it run in rain? A: Yes, rain or shine. Rain makes the track muddier and more fun. Only severe weather cancels, and then you are refunded or rebooked. Q: What should I wear? A: Closed-toe shoes (required), shorts or pants you do not mind getting dirty, sunglasses, and a bandana or buff for dust on dry days. Helmets are provided. Q: What is the cancellation policy? A: Full refund if you cancel 48 or more hours before the start time. URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/ja/north-shore-atv-tour/ Rank on our list: #7 Where: ワイアルア, ノースショア Price: from $75 Duration: 約1時間(走行は約45分) Season: 通年、雨天決行 Best time: ノースショアが暑くなる前の午前中か、海がきれいに輝く午後遅く。 A: はい。 A: いいえ。 # Planning guides --- ## Best Beaches on Oʻahu: 12 Beaches by Shore, With the Safety Notes That Matter URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/blog/best-beaches-on-oahu/ Updated: 2026-10-28 The best beaches on Oʻahu by shore: Waikiki, Ala Moana, Hanauma Bay, Sandy Beach and Makapuʻu on the south; Lanikai, Kailua and Waimānalo on the windward side; Waimea Bay, Sharks Cove and Sunset Beach on the North Shore; Ko Olina and Mākaha on the west side. With lifeguards, parking and when the surf is dangerous. Oʻahu has 125 beaches and you will not get to most of them. These are the twelve we send people to, grouped by shore because the shore decides everything: the south is calm all year, the windward side is calm in the morning, the North Shore is a swimming hole in summer and a stadium in winter, and the west is sunny and quiet. Lifeguards, parking and the swell season are listed for each one. The rule above all others: if the lifeguard flags are red, stay on the sand. ## South shore: Waikiki and east ### Waikiki Beach Two miles of sand from the Hilton to Diamond Head, reef-protected and calm nearly every day of the year, lifeguarded at Kūhiō and Queen’s. It is really six beaches: Fort DeRussy at the Hilton end has the widest sand and the fewest people; the stretch in front of the Royal Hawaiian and the Moana is the classic strip with the surf lessons and the outrigger canoes; Kūhiō Beach and Queen’s by the breakwaters are the calmest swimming for kids; Kaimana (Sans Souci) past the aquarium is the locals’ beach with the clearest water. The sunset catamaran loads off the sand at the Outrigger Reef. Summer south swells bring waves for surfers and keep swimmers in the breakwater pools. ### Ala Moana Beach Park Across from the mall and next to Kewalo Basin, a half-mile lagoon behind a reef with zero surf, lifeguards, free parking, showers and grass with shade. The best swimming on the south shore, and where Honolulu families go. The parasail and turtle snorkel boats leave from the harbor at its west end; swim here after. ### Hanauma Bay A flooded crater 25 minutes east of Waikiki and the best shore snorkeling on Oʻahu, with turtles and hundreds of fish species in a protected reef. Reservations open online two days ahead at 7 am Hawaii time and sell out in minutes; closed Mondays and Tuesdays; conservation fee and a mandatory nine-minute video. Lifeguards. Go for the earliest slot, snorkel the inner reef, and stay off the coral. Afternoon trades bring the chop. ### Sandy Beach and Makapuʻu Past Hanauma on the Kaʻiwi coast. Sandy Beach has the most famous shorebreak on the island and injures more people than any beach in Hawaii; watch the bodyboarders from the sand. Makapuʻu Beach, under the lighthouse cliffs, is beautiful and dangerous in winter and calm in summer. Both have lifeguards. The Makapuʻu lighthouse trail above them is the easiest great walk on the island, with whales below from December to April. ## Windward side: over the Pali ### Lanikai Beach The postcard: powder sand, water the color of a swimming pool, the twin Mokulua Islands offshore. No lifeguards, no facilities, no parking except residential streets with strict rules; walk in from Kailua Beach Park or bike. Calmest in the morning before the trades fill in. The Mokulua kayak crosses the bay to the islands you are looking at. The 30-minute Pillbox hike above the beach is the sunrise to get up for. ### Kailua Beach Park Lanikai’s bigger, easier neighbor: a two-mile crescent with lifeguards, parking, restrooms, showers, kayak and paddleboard rentals and the launch point for Flat Island and the Mokes. Morning glass, afternoon wind chop. The best all-round beach on the windward side and the one to pick with kids. ### Waimānalo Beach Fifteen minutes south of Kailua, the longest white-sand beach on Oʻahu, three miles of it under the Koʻolau cliffs with hardly anyone on it. Lifeguards at Waimānalo Beach Park. Gentle shorebreak most of the year, bigger in winter. Ironwood shade. Local, quiet, the beach to spend an afternoon on after the kayak. ## North Shore: two different planets ### Waimea Bay Summer: a glassy swimming bay with a jump rock, clear enough to snorkel, lifeguards, parking that fills by 10. Winter: the most famous big-wave arena in the world, 20 to 30 feet on the big days, the Eddie Aikau contest when it is biggest, and absolutely no swimming. Same beach, two planets. Ten minutes from the shark boats at Haleʻiwa and the ATV farm in Waialua. ### Sharks Cove Across from the Foodland in Pūpūkea, a rocky cove with the best shore snorkeling on the North Shore from May to September: lava tubes, caves, turtles and fish in water that is often flat as a lake. Closed by surf from October to April. No sand to speak of, reef shoes required, no lifeguard. The name has nothing to do with sharks. ### Sunset Beach and ʻEhukai (Pipeline) Two miles of sand along Kamehameha Highway past Waimea. Sunset Beach is the long one with the pro contest in December; ʻEhukai Beach Park fronts the Banzai Pipeline, the most photographed wave on earth, which breaks a stone’s throw from the sand in winter. Watch from the beach, December to February, with the lifeguards’ permission. In summer both are calm and quiet with soft sand and nobody around. ## West side: sun and quiet ### Ko Olina Lagoons Four man-made lagoons on the resort coast 45 minutes west of Waikiki, each a protected crescent with zero surf, a sandy bottom and a path between them. The calmest water on the island for toddlers and nervous swimmers, with turtles at the rocky openings. Public access with limited free parking lots that fill by 9; the Disney and Four Seasons resorts sit on two of them. Sun is near guaranteed. Pair it with the dolphin safari from Waiʻanae, 20 minutes north. ### Mākaha Beach The west side’s classic surf beach, 20 minutes past Waiʻanae, with lifeguards, a wide sand crescent and a big winter break that hosted the first pro contests in the 1950s. Summer is calm and the water is as clear as anywhere on Oʻahu; snorkel the rocks at the north end. Local, respectful, and a long way from the strip. ## The safety notes that matter - Red flags mean no. Oʻahu’s lifeguards fly red flags for dangerous conditions and they are not negotiable. Swim at lifeguarded beaches, especially with kids. - North Shore in winter is for watching. From November to March, Waimea, Pipeline and Sunset are not swimming beaches. Rip currents pull from the sand; people die every winter. - Shorebreak. Sandy Beach and Makapuʻu drop waves onto sand in shallow water, which breaks necks. Watch first. - Reef-safe sunscreen is the law in Hawaii; sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned. - Turtles and monk seals are protected. Ten feet from turtles, fifty from seals, no touching, no feeding. - Never turn your back on the ocean. The one rule every local learns first. For which beach fits which day, see the Oʻahu map and the things to do in Waikiki guide. --- ## Best Time to Visit Waikiki and Oʻahu: Month by Month, From People Who Work on the Water URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/blog/best-time-to-visit-oahu/ Updated: 2026-10-28 When to visit Waikiki and Oʻahu for calm seas, whales, North Shore surf, warm water, low prices or small crowds. Month-by-month weather, water temperature, swell, rain, hurricane season, crowds, and which tours suit each season. The honest answer is that Waikiki is good in every month. It sits on the sheltered south shore, the water is 75 to 81°F all year, and the trade winds keep the afternoons at 80-something degrees. What changes with the season is the rest of the island: the North Shore flips from glassy snorkel bays to 30-foot surf, the whales come and go, and the prices and crowds swing by half. Here is how the year actually goes, from people who are on the water every day. ## The short version - Best overall: April, May, September and October. Calm on every coast, whales on the way out or in, fewer people, lower prices. - Best for the North Shore boats and snorkeling: May through September, when the north swells are gone. - Best for whales: January through March, with the season running December to April. - Best for watching big surf: December to February on the North Shore, from the sand. - Best value: late April to mid June and September to early December, outside the holidays. - Watch out for: Christmas to New Year and Golden Week (late April to early May, when Japan travels) for prices; hurricane season June to November, which rarely matters but is worth insurance. ## Water temperature and swell by season Months | Water temp | What the ocean is doing | Dec to Mar | 75 to 77°F | Big north swells: North Shore beaches dangerous, shark boats cancel on the biggest days. Waikiki and the west side calm. Whales everywhere. | Apr to May | 76 to 78°F | North swell fading, trades steady. Everything runs. Last whales in April. | Jun to Sep | 79 to 81°F | North Shore flat and glassy, Sharks Cove and Waimea Bay snorkelable. Summer south swells bring real waves to Waikiki for surfers; the boats are unaffected. | Oct to Nov | 78 to 80°F | First north swells arrive in October. Trades lighten; kona (southerly) winds occasionally bring humid, still days. Whales return in late November. | ## Month by month ### January and February Peak whale season and peak surf. Highs around 80°F, cool nights, and the wettest months of the year, mostly in short showers over the mountains. The North Shore swells are at their biggest: the big-wave contests run, the beaches are for watching, and the shark snorkel goes out only on the calmer days. Waikiki is flat and sunny; parasailing and the Turtle Canyon snorkel run every day with whales below. The west side is the whale coast: the dolphin safari becomes a dolphin and whale trip for the same price. Prices are high through mid-January and around Presidents’ Day. ### March Whales still thick, swell easing, spring break crowds. The North Shore starts to calm by the end of the month. A good month for the sunset sail with spouts at golden hour. Book the dolphins and sharks early; spring break families fill the small boats. ### April and May Our favorite months. The north swell is gone, the water is warming, every boat on the island is running, and the crowds and prices drop after Easter, with one exception: Golden Week, Japan’s holiday cluster in the last days of April and the first of May, fills Waikiki hotels. The Mokulua kayak has its lightest winds and the last whales pass in April. ### June, July and August Summer: flat North Shore, warm water, long days and the busiest season for families. This is the best season for the shark boats and for snorkeling at Waimea Bay and Sharks Cove. Waikiki gets its summer south swells, which make surf lessons more fun and leave the catamarans and parasail boats untouched. Afternoon trades build daily, so morning departures are the smart ones everywhere. Hotel prices are at their highest outside Christmas. ### September and October The locals’ summer. The water is at its warmest, the North Shore stays flat into October, school is back in and prices fall. Hurricane season is technically open but Oʻahu sees a real threat about once a decade; buy insurance and do not worry. The first north swells arrive in late October, which is the signal that the surf season is coming. ### November The shoulder. Rain picks up, the north swells build and the surf contests begin at Haleʻiwa. The first whales appear in the second half of the month. Thanksgiving week is busy; the two weeks either side are quiet and cheap. ### December Winter proper: big surf, whales, short showers, and the most expensive two weeks of the year from Christmas to New Year, when hotels sell out months ahead. The first three weeks of December are a quiet bargain. The Honolulu Marathon is the second Sunday. ## Which trip, which month - Parasailing, Turtle Canyon snorkel, sunset sail: every month; whales December to April. - North Shore shark snorkel: best May to October; runs in winter on calm days with more cancellations. - North Shore ATV: every month, rain or shine; winter puts the big surf beside the trail. - West side dolphins: every month; December to April doubles as a whale watch. - Kailua kayak: best April to October for light winds; winter runs when the bay allows. - Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor: every month; go early. ## Weather, briefly Oʻahu has two seasons: summer (May to October), drier and a few degrees warmer, and winter (November to April), wetter and a few degrees cooler. Waikiki, in the lee of the Koʻolau range, is the driest part of the island and sees sun most days year round; the windward side and the North Shore get the showers. Trade winds blow from the north-east about 300 days a year and keep the humidity down; when they stop and the kona winds come from the south, it gets sticky for a few days and the south shore boats feel it. Hurricanes are rare, and the island has not taken a direct hit in decades. ## When to book Peak-season trips with small boats (the six-seat shark boat and the eight-seat dolphin boat) sell out a week or more ahead in summer and over the holidays, and the dolphin safari has a ten-day cancellation window. Hanauma Bay reservations open two days ahead and go in minutes. Diamond Head needs a day or two. Pearl Harbor’s Arizona boat opens eight weeks out. Everything else in Waikiki can be booked the day before. For the full list and what each one costs, see our top adventures. --- ## Things to Do in Waikiki: The Local's List, From the Beach to the North Shore URL: https://waikikiadventureguide.com/blog/things-to-do-in-waikiki/ Updated: 2026-10-28 What to actually do in Waikiki and the day trips worth leaving for: parasailing and turtle snorkeling from Kewalo Basin, the sunset sail off the beach, Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor, the North Shore shark boats and ATVs, Kailua's kayaks and the west-side dolphins, with drive times, prices and the order to do them in. Waikiki is the easiest beach town in the Pacific: two miles of calm water, a hundred restaurants, and a harbor full of boats ten minutes away. It is also the base for an island that most visitors see from a tour bus window. This is the list we give friends who are staying on the strip: what to do without a car, which day trips are worth the drive, and how to put a week together. ## The short version - Without a car, in Waikiki: parasail or snorkel Turtle Canyon from Kewalo Basin in the morning, the beach all afternoon, the sunset catamaran off the sand at 5:30. Diamond Head at sunrise one day; Hanauma Bay another. - One day on the North Shore: the shark snorkel at 8, garlic shrimp in Haleʻiwa, the beachfront ATV at 1, Waimea Bay, shave ice. - One day on the windward side: kayak to the Mokulua Islands, Kailua town for lunch, Lanikai Pillbox the next sunrise. - One early morning on the west side: the dolphin safari from Waiʻanae at 7, Ko Olina lagoons after. - One half day of history: Pearl Harbor, reserved ahead. ## In Waikiki, no car needed ### Parasail over Diamond Head The fastest way to see the whole south shore. A ten-minute ride to Kewalo Basin, an hour on the boat, a dry takeoff from the deck, and eight to twelve minutes at up to 1,200 feet with Waikiki, Diamond Head and the city laid out beneath you. From $75, ages 5 and up, hourly all day. Our parasailing page has the tiers, the weight rules and the harbor directions. ### Snorkel Turtle Canyon The reef a mile off Waikiki where green sea turtles rest and get cleaned by wrasse. Every boat on the south shore goes; the one we book has snorkel guides in the water with you, takes kids from age 3, and holds a perfect 5.0 across more than 9,000 reviews. Two hours from Kewalo Basin, from $79. Details on the Turtle Canyon page. ### The sunset sail off the beach Walk down to the Outrigger Reef, wade to the catamaran, open bar, 90 minutes under sail while Diamond Head turns gold and the lights come on. From $80. Book a Friday and watch the Hilton fireworks from the sand afterward. Our sunset sail page covers the boarding and the bar. ### Diamond Head at sunrise The crater hike is 1.6 miles round trip with stairs and a tunnel, 45 minutes up for most people, and the view from the rim covers Waikiki to Koko Head. Reservations are required for non-residents (book online a day or two ahead), the first slot is 6 am, and the first slot is the one to take: it is cool, the light is sideways and the crowds are asleep. Bus 2 or a $15 rideshare from the strip. ### Learn to surf Waikiki’s waves are long, soft and slow, which is why surfing was reborn here. The beach boys in front of the Royal Hawaiian and at Kūhiō Beach have been teaching for a century; an hour’s lesson gets most people standing. Mornings are glassiest. Summer south swells make it more fun for anyone who has done it before. ### The beach itself Waikiki Beach is really six beaches end to end. Queen’s and Kūhiō by the breakwaters are the calm swimming ends for kids; Fort DeRussy at the Hilton end has the most sand and the fewest people; the stretch in front of the Royal Hawaiian is the classic postcard. Our beaches guide breaks it down. ### Evenings Walk Kalākaua at dusk, watch the hula show at Kūhiō Beach on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights (free, at the hula mound), eat at a food hall or a plate-lunch counter instead of a hotel restaurant, and catch the Friday fireworks from the sand at Fort DeRussy. ## Day trips worth leaving for ### The North Shore An hour north on the H-1 and H-2 and you are in country: one road, seven miles of beaches, shrimp trucks, surf shops. In winter (November to March) the surf is 10 to 30 feet and the beaches are for watching; in summer the same bays are glass. The two adventures we book are the cageless shark snorkel three miles off Haleʻiwa, which is the single most talked-about trip on the island, and the beachfront ATV ride in Waialua, the only ATV on Oʻahu and the best land stop for families. Between them: garlic shrimp at the trucks in Kahuku or Haleʻiwa, Waimea Bay, Sharks Cove snorkeling in summer, Matsumoto’s shave ice. Leave Waikiki by 6:30 am to beat the freeway and come back after 6:30 pm. ### Kailua and the windward side Thirty-five minutes over the Pali Highway, through the tunnels, and down to the bluest water on the island. The guided kayak to the Mokulua Islands is the day: a paddle across Kailua Bay, a permitted landing on Moku Nui, snorkeling and a picnic lunch. Lanikai Beach next door is the postcard; Kailua Beach Park has the parking and the lifeguards. The 30-minute Lanikai Pillbox hike at sunrise looks down on all of it. Kāneʻohe Bay and the Byodo-In Temple are 20 minutes north; Waimānalo’s long empty beach is 15 minutes south. ### The west side at dawn Oʻahu’s spinner dolphins hunt offshore at night and rest in the calm bays of the leeward coast after sunrise, which is why the dolphin safari leaves Waiʻanae Harbor at 7 am and why you drive out in the dark. Eight guests, naturalist guides, wild dolphins on the bow, a guided turtle snorkel, and whales from December to April. After it, the Ko Olina lagoons are the calmest swimming on the island. ### Hanauma Bay A flooded crater 25 minutes east of Waikiki with the best shore snorkeling on Oʻahu. Reservations open online two days ahead at 7 am Hawaii time and sell out in minutes; the bay is closed Mondays and Tuesdays; there is a conservation fee and a mandatory video. Go for the first entry, snorkel the inner reef on the right side, and stay off the coral. On the drive, stop at the Hālona Blowhole and the Makapuʻu lighthouse trail. ### Pearl Harbor Twenty minutes from Waikiki and the most visited site in Hawaii. The USS Arizona Memorial boat program is free but needs a reservation (released eight weeks out and the day before); the museums and the Pacific Aviation Museum, the USS Missouri and the USS Bowfin submarine are ticketed and fill a half day. No bags are allowed inside; use the storage at the entrance. Go early, book the Arizona slot first, and do the Missouri after. ### Central Oʻahu The Dole Plantation sits on the road to the North Shore and makes a natural stop (the pineapple maze, the train, the soft-serve). Wahiawā has the birthing stones. None of it is a day on its own; fold it into the North Shore drive. ## A week in Waikiki, in order - Arrival day. Beach, sunset sail at 5:30, early night. - Day 2. Parasail at 9, Turtle Canyon at 11, Ala Moana Beach Park for the afternoon. - Day 3. North Shore: sharks at 8, Haleʻiwa lunch, ATV at 1, Waimea Bay, home after dark. - Day 4. Diamond Head at 6 am, Hanauma Bay at 9 (reserved two days earlier), Kakaʻako for dinner. - Day 5. Kailua: Mokulua kayak in the morning, town for lunch, Waimānalo Beach after. - Day 6. West side: dolphins at 7, Ko Olina lagoons, back for a surf lesson at 4. - Day 7. Pearl Harbor in the morning, the beach and shopping in the afternoon, fireworks if it is Friday. Swap days for weather: the North Shore and windward days want calm trade winds, the west side is good in any weather, and Waikiki is good always. The best time to visit guide explains the seasons. ## Getting around You do not need a car for Waikiki, Kewalo Basin, Diamond Head, Ala Moana or Pearl Harbor (the bus and rideshares cover all of it). You do need one for the North Shore, Kailua and the west side; a rental for two or three days is cheaper than rideshares and lets you stay out there. Hotel parking in Waikiki runs $40 to $60 a night, so rent by the day from the Waikiki rental desks rather than for the whole trip. The Oʻahu map has the drive times.
